The Trustees of Kernow Learning and school governing body are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Andy Watkins as the new Headteacher of St Newlyn East Learning Academy.
Andy will take up the position officially in January and spend some time at the school between during November and December to work with his new team and get to know the children.
Andy has been teaching in primary education for 16 years, with his first years based in Poole, Dorset. During his career he has developed a passion for supporting and guiding children with SEND and instilling a love of reading and all subjects, particularly physical education in the pupils he has taught across all primary stages.
After teaching for a number of years in St Ives, Andy began his leadership journey at Treloweth school in Pool, before moving to Tregolls School in Truro, where he and the team managed to transform the school from close to closure to a school of choice.
Andy started working for Kernow Learning in February 2020, on secondment from Tregolls School, as acting Headteacher at St Columb Major Academy, covering a maternity leave. He is currently covering another maternity leave as Assistant Head at Charlestown Primary School where he will continue this role until taking on his new role full time in January.
Andy Watkins, newly appointed Headteacher said: “Being part of a passionate team who value one another’s abilities is what drives me. The challenge of the lock-down whilst in acting Head role at St Columb Major Academy was really helped by the wonderful support of the children, staff, parents and wider community. We came through it with hope for a brighter future.”
Since converting to an academy in 2013, St Newlyn East Learning Academy has remained a good school in all areas. It’s strong board of local governors, supported by a team of experienced staff within the school and wider Trust, have enabled the high standards to be maintained which the team are sure Mr. Watkins will now be able to build on.
Jennie Walker, Kernow Learning CEO, said; “We are very excited to have Andy joining the St Newlyn East team and our wider Kernow Learning leadership team. He is a creative and dynamic leader of learning. I hope that he will be very happy at the school.’’
